How Volunteers Helped Build Kenward Trust’s Chapel
At Kenward Trust, our Christian ethos has been at the heart of our work since the charity was founded in 1968. Supporting individuals affected by addiction, homelessness and complex life challenges is central to our mission and providing a space for reflection, prayer and spiritual support has always been an important part of that journey.
For many years, the original chapel at Kenward served residents and staff well. However, after repeated flooding and years of deterioration, the building eventually fell into disrepair and could no longer be used. While small Bible study groups continued to meet elsewhere on site, it was clear that a dedicated chapel space was greatly missed.
Kenward Trust’s Chapel
Determined to restore this important part of Kenward life, long-standing volunteers and trustees Sandra Belton and Hazel Sinden set out to make a new chapel a reality. Knowing that the project could not be funded through Kenward Trust’s operational budget, they embarked on a remarkable fundraising effort.
Through countless coffee mornings, cake sales, personal donations and the generosity of supporters, funds were gradually raised over a period of two years. Their commitment, alongside the support of the local community, enabled the purchase of what is now Kenward Trust’s chapel.
The project did not stop there. Volunteers rolled up their sleeves to paint and decorate the interior, install insulation and electrics, lay flooring and create a welcoming environment for worship and reflection. They also built the decking and pathways leading to the chapel, ensuring it would be accessible and inviting for everyone who wished to use it.
Adding to the chapel’s significance, a beautiful wooden cross, discovered in the attic of Kenward House, was restored and erected outside the building, creating a visible reminder of the Christian faith that continues to underpin our work.
Today, the chapel is a thriving and valued part of the Kenward community. Weekly Bible study sessions, monthly prayer meetings and quiet times of personal reflection take place within its walls. Residents, staff, volunteers and visitors all benefit from having a peaceful space dedicated to spiritual wellbeing.
The chapel stands as a testament to what can be achieved through faith, determination and community support. It is much more than a building; it is a symbol of hope, generosity, and the lasting impact that volunteers can make.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported the fundraising effort, attended coffee mornings, made donations, volunteered their time, or offered prayers along the way. Your contribution has helped create a lasting legacy that will continue to serve Kenward Trust for many years to come.
