Cullum’s story: One day at a time
Cullum arrived at Kenward at one of the lowest points in his life.
“I came to Kenward at a point where I’d become homeless through my addiction,” Cullum says. “Kenward gave me a place where I could reset, deal with my problems, and, more importantly, understand what recovery is.”
“They made me feel like I could be heard for the first time, and I became open and honest.”
For Cullum, the change started with something simple, but powerful: being listened to.
“I found it an incredible experience. For the first time, I found some hope,” they say. “The people at Kenward were really helpful. They made me feel like I could be heard for the first time, and I became open and honest.”
That support did not just help Cullum get through the day. It helped them build a future. Today, Cullum now uses that experience to help others.
“Kenward inspired me to help others, and that’s what I do today,” Cullum explains. “I work in partnership with the probation service to help individuals with their recovery and rehabilitation.”
“it is possible, one day at a time.”
Cullum is clear that recovery is not straightforward. It takes courage, consistency, and support.
“Recovery isn’t easy. No one said recovery is easy,” they say. “It takes a lot of courage and a lot of strength. But by working a programme of recovery, going to meetings, and engaging with different services, it is possible, one day at a time.”
Their advice to anyone struggling is direct: start by asking for help, then keep showing up.
“The best advice I can give is to admit that you have a problem and ask for help,” Cullum says. “It’s not until you do that, that help can come. When that help comes, be prepared to be as open and honest as possible, and put everything you can into getting better.”
Because change is possible, even when it feels out of reach.
“Today, I can say that I’m in the best place I have ever been,” Cullum says. “It’s really thanks to The Kenward Trust. Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Kenward will always have a big place in my heart.”
